Tiahna's Instagram Takeover
“Hi, my name is Tiahna. I’m 14 years old and I’m in the 8th grade. I have Sickle Cell Anemia, SS. My favorite food is lobster but it’s expensive, so I don’t get to eat it all the time. I really love deep fried philly cheese steak. I like to bowl, play basketball, and hang out with my friends. For me, sickle cell is not a hindrance, it’s a lifestyle. I hope you enjoy spending the day with me!”
“In the morning before school, I wake up and take my Hydroxyurea. I take it every morning. I take vitamin D in the morning too. If I have chest pain, then I use the incentive spirometer. Now, if I have general morning pain, I take pain medicine. I sometimes use the Epsom salt and hot packs while the pain medicine is working. If I’m well enough, then my mom lets me go to school. If I have too much pain, then she lets me stay home that day. I’m usually able to go to school. I’m just sometimes tardy."
“At school, I play on the basketball team. We always have fun. Our record was 12 -2 last year. I’m a shooting guard and point guard. I like playing basketball because it takes my mind off of a lot of things. When I come out of the hospital, it’s the first thing I want to do because I can’t play while I’m hospitalized. Basketball distracts me from what’s going on. I drink a lot of fluids while I play basketball. I drink water and Gatorade, but mostly water because it’s pure. It doesn’t have a lot of sugars or anything like that. Gatorade sometimes has too much sugar, and it’s not as good as water.”
“After school, I love to bowl. I don’t love it more than basketball, but it is something I’ve done since I was little. I normally bowl with some of my cousins and some friends that I’ve known for a long time. I bowl with a junior league. I’ve known most of the people there since I was little.”
“I have a sister and a brother. They both have the trait. My sister is older and my brother is younger. My sister is at college. I get to see her when she comes home. I am going to visit her next week. I don’t get to see her that much but we’re still close. My brother and I are always together. My brother spends time with me when I’m in the hospital. He brings me my homework from school and talks to all my teachers for me.”
“Before I go to bed, I take my Hydroxyurea and take another vitamin D. I take it before I go to sleep. I do my hair and then I go to bed. Sometimes I can get a full night’s rest. Other times I can’t fall asleep. If I have pain, I’ll be really tired, but I just can’t fall asleep. When that happens, I usually tell my mom that I’m going to take something for my pain. Then I get a heating pad, and I try my best to close my eyes and go to sleep. It sometimes works but not all the time."
“This is my mom and dad. Sometimes we walk to school. If it’s too cold or too hot, then my mom gives us a ride. She helps me remember my medicine. My mom drives me to my doctor’s appointments. Whenever I’m in pain, she’s the first person that helps me. I wouldn’t know where I’d be without her in my life. Thanks for spending the day with me!”
